Overall Review: In my opinion this is pretty much the ultimate budget board for the standard gamer. This is a budget overclocker, not an enthusiast board. I had to mount a Thermaltake V1 with airflow pointed up instead of back because its pretty tight around the CPU socket (and the V1 is a huge heatsink) Limited to 4 gigs of ram in two slots (which honestly is plenty for the vast majority of people). SATA plugs can be blocked by the video card, 90 degree cables and advanced planning helps. There are several choices, both passive or with a fan. I replaced the northbridge passive cooler and suddenly could do higher overclocks. The northbridge gets too hot and there is no temp diode on the mobo so you dont know how hot without a thermometer. The PCI-E slot is not 2.0 but is fast enough for almost any video card out there.

This is a budget micro-atx board, so be aware. more along the lines of limitations because of the nature of what it is.

The ability to start with a budget build CPU and upgrade to a quad core later was a big selling point for me.Ĭons: There are some things to point out about this, no so much cons. Everything worked for me and its kept on ticking for over a year. Onboard video is perfectly fine for everything except gaming, but there is of course the PCI-16 slot for adding a video card (like the gtx 260 I stuck in mine). Onboard sound is adequate and so is the onboard LAN.īIOS settings are perfectly adequate for normal overclocking and with the shift/F1 command you can access some more advanced functions. No bios upgrade was needed for either of these CPUs to work. Pros: I have been using this board for over a year so I figured time to do a follow up review.įirst of all, worked great with my E5200 CPU, easily overclocked it to 3500 (from 2500) and is now running my q9550 at 3500 with just two voltage bumps. Note: To configure 7.1-channel audio, you need connect with the port of HD Audio standard via front panel and enable the multi-channel audio feature through the audio driver.Īdditional Information Date First Available

It's a great board for a Windows HTPC using the onboard video, but not for OSx86.ĨGB of RAM would be great, but unfortunately it's hard to find 4GB sticks of DDR2 for a reasonable price.Learn more about the GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L Model BrandĬore 2 Quad / Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Duo It's not designed to use a separate video card (IE, why the slot is only 4x not 16x) so you'd just be paying more for needless HDMI and DVI that isn't Hack-compatible. The ES2H is a bad choice for Hackintosh, "beater" or not. DVI via my 8600GTS video card, of course. HappyJack, yes the onboard ethernet works OOB. Both perform about the same as far as I can tell, so if there's a better guide and support for the G31M board (IE: if Kaido releases one) it could be the better choice. I used to have one, but since gave it up for the G41 board. Keep in mind the GA-G31M-ES2L is also a really good choice.

I do however have several installs of OSX on the same drive- my original 10.5.8 install (I need to update my sig) is untouched. I personally don't like messing with OSX on the same drive as Windows.

I always dual boot using two different hard drives, one for OSX, and another for Windows (and sometimes Linux on the same drive with Windows, as in my main system). The osx86 project wiki has a pretty good list of graphic cards that should work fine with Snow Leopard.
